When it comes to exercise, we often think about the workout itself. The weights we lift, the miles we run, the reps we complete and how hard we push ourselves.
But there is something just as important that happens before the workout even begins: fuelling your body.
And it isn’t just about having enough energy to exercise. What you put into your body can directly affect your focus, motivation, decision-making and mindset.
Your body needs fuel. So does your mind.
Think of your body like a vehicle. You wouldn’t expect a vehicle to perform properly with an empty fuel tank, yet many people turn up to training having eaten very little, gone hours without food or simply haven’t given their body what it needs.
When you’re under-fuelled, your body has less available energy to perform. You can feel tired, sluggish and weak, but the effects can also reach your mind.
Your concentration can suffer. Your motivation can drop. Exercise can suddenly feel harder than it should.
That is where your mindset comes into play.
When your body struggles, your mindset can follow
Military training teaches an important lesson: you have to be prepared before the challenge begins.
If you’re going into a demanding session already feeling drained, you’re starting from a disadvantage.
You may find yourself thinking:
“I can’t be bothered today.”
“This feels much harder than normal.”
“I don’t think I can finish this.”
Sometimes, what feels like a lack of motivation isn’t actually a mindset problem. Your body simply hasn’t been properly fuelled.
When your energy levels are low, maintaining focus and pushing through discomfort becomes more difficult. Your perception of the challenge can change, and something you would normally handle can suddenly feel overwhelming.
Fuel gives you more than energy
A good pre-workout meal or snack isn’t about eating as much as possible. It’s about giving your body the right fuel at the right time.
Carbohydrates can provide readily available energy for training, while protein supports muscle repair and recovery. Fluids help maintain hydration, which is also important for both physical and mental performance.
But perhaps the biggest benefit is readiness.
You’ve prepared your body.
You’ve prepared your mind.
Now you’re ready to attack the session.
Don’t underestimate the mental side of preparation
Military Mindset isn’t about simply telling yourself to “push harder.”
It’s about understanding that performance comes from preparation, discipline and consistency.
Fuelling your body is part of that preparation.
Whether you’re heading into a tough Military Mindset session, a workout at Go Beyond Your Limits, a run, a long walk or simply a busy day, giving your body what it needs can help you feel more alert, focused and ready to perform.
Because when your body feels ready, your mind is in a much better position to take control.
Prepare. Fuel. Perform.
The next time you train, don’t just think about what you’re going to do during the workout.
Think about what you’re doing before it.
Have you eaten? Are you hydrated? Have you given your body the fuel it needs?
Because a strong mindset doesn’t start when the first rep begins.
It starts with preparation.
Fuel your body. Prepare your mind. Then go beyond your limits.
